The most beautiful hiking routes
Every trail through the Drenthe countryside is full of surprises. But if we had to recommend just a few, the popular Van Gogh walking route or the Drentsche Aa trails are absolute musts. Closer to home, you'll find Drouwenerzand – a stunning area with the Gasselter heath, small shifting sand dunes, and the nature reserve De Branden, which also serves as a water storage area. Prefer to explore Drenthe by bike? Go for it! The so-called 'cycling junction routes Drenthe' lead you past dolmens, sheepfolds, and traces of ancient settlements.

Enjoying the greenery
Did you know that Drenthe is home to many forests? The Exloo Forestry area is within cycling distance. For a walk through other woods, like the Schoonloo or Grolloo Forestry areas, it's better to take the car. These spruce forests were originally planted for timber production, but today they form a beautiful contrast to the ponds and heathlands that are so characteristic of Drenthe.
Nature reserves in Drenthe
Drouwenerzand on the Hondsrug is a dynamic drifting sand area full of contrast. You'll find purple heath among ancient trees and sturdy sand dunes. The sand shifts with the wind, creating a unique habitat. This ancient landscape, with its giant boulders and rich legends, was formed during the Ice Age, when glacial rivers shaped the region’s characteristic ridges.
The Drentsche Aa National Park is a stream valley with winding creeks, grasslands, forests, and historic villages. The area has remained almost completely intact. Along the quiet walking trails and open fields, you'll find peace and stunning colors throughout the landscape.

Make the kids happy!
Heading out with the family? There are plenty of great outings for kids. In addition to playing on a forest playground, a haunted house or roller coaster is high on many children’s wishlists – and who can blame them?
